Food photography props can make or break any shoot. The right choice can complement the color, textures, and shape of your dish. They can elevate your recipe. Most importantly, the right props can tell the story of your dish with creativity and its unique personality.
In some ways, the barriers to entry for food photography are incredibly low. If you know how to work light, a good camera phone is enough for the job, at least to start with. And we all eat every day, so it’s not hard to come up with subjects for food photography!
But on the other hand, as we start to browse the successful accounts and watch more and more #bts videos, the must-haves can start to feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to props and backdrops. I’m here to advocate for a smaller prop shop to start. I truly believe the more limitations we have at the beginning of a creative journey, the better. Boundaries force us to problem solve, which is just another way of saying they force us to become more creative. Another advantage to limited props is we figure out what we really use over and over again. When we know that, we can invest in better pieces that we know we’ll use. So to facilitate creating new, unique images TODAY, here are 25 props you may own right this moment.
The free printable pdf was created as a place to curate and share all the tips and tricks I bring to every shoot. The pdf is 10 pages long and full of images to inspire and illustrate my points.
