14 Step Checklist to Prevent Hacks {For Creative Business Owners}

[spacer height="20px"]

To be honest, I never worried about cyber security for my small business. I just assumed Facebook hacks were things that happened to other people. To be extra careful, though, I made sure I turned on two-factor authentication for my Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Turns out, that wasn't enough. One day, I was in my garage doing a shoot and posting behind-the-scenes images to my Instagram stories. The next minute, I was booted out of my account. The next 3 days unfolded like a nightmare and my accounts have *never* been restored. I had to start from scratch on Instagram which was a major stream of listeners to my podcast. It was a big blow.

But you're not here for my story -

You're here to find out how to secure your Facebook, Instagram, and other accounts from hackers.

What I've learned in the last year is that you truly do not need to worry about hackers. It IS possible to secure your accounts and defend your creative business.

Defending your creative business from hacks has three parts:

  1. The first step is to make sure your accounts are backed up and secure. (Did you know you can back up all your IG followers?!)
  2. The second step is to ensure you can recover your accounts or data in the very small chance hackers get around your cybersecurity.
  3. The third and final step is to position your creative business to quickly reconnect with your audience if one platform is compromised. And honestly, the ability to connect with our audience if one marketing platform is removed isn't just a cyber security issue. The truth is we're not guaranteed the existence of Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, or any other platform we use as creative business owners. This is a great time to make sure you're prepared to stay in touch with your audience no matter what happens.

This 14 Step Checklist to Prevent Hacks contains absolutely everything I learned about hack-proofing my business.

In the weeks following my hack, I did so much research trying to understand what happened to my account. I read articles, called journalists covering hacks like mine, and connected with victims of the same hack. At the same time, cybersecurity experts and Facebook employees were reaching out to me with advice and help. When I finally went back online, I was determined that my experience would help others.

So I put together this plan to help you stop worrying and defend your business from hackers.

The checklist is divided into three sections with a timeline for each, so you don't feel overwhelmed. The good news is that you can implement the most urgent things in just a few minutes!
