Welcome to The Storied Recipe, a podcast about food, culture, and love.

This is the second recipe round-up in my six-part Summer Drinks Around the World series. I've curated this list of 36 Summer Coffee Drinks at Home in conjunction with Episode 58 I Wanted Something Different from my podcast guest, Juan Salazar.

You can be your own barista this summer! This post is somewhat self-indulgent because, like many of you coffee lovers out there, I love nothing more on a hot summer day than a cold coffee, but I don't want to leave my house to go get it. Iced coffee and the rising popularity of cold brew coffee has really blown up in the last few years. Luckily for us, this means a lot of new recipes are popping up all over the place that teaches us how to make the best coffee at home. For the most part, you don't even need to own an espresso machine to make some of your new favorite summer coffee drinks.

Make sure to also check out the other round-up posts in my Summer Drinks Around the World series so you can have endless inspiration for cold summer drinks to cool you down during this warmer weather season!

How to Use This List

  • I did not list all of the iced coffee recipes that are classic favorites (plain iced coffee, plain iced latte, plain cold brew, etc.) simply because I wanted to have a list that inspired you to try something different. Not that there is anything wrong with a simple iced coffee!
  • There are lots of FAQs at the bottom that dig into questions about summer coffee recipes!
  • Each recipe is formatted as the title of the recipe, followed by a "|" symbol and then the blog or person who it is from.
  • This list is organized by the following: Iced Lattes, International Iced Coffee Drinks, Iced Alcoholic Coffee Drinks, Copycat Starbucks Summer Drinks, Fizzy Iced Coffee Drinks, and Vegan Cold Coffee Drinks.

Iced Lattes

An iced latte is one of my favorite cold drinks during the summer, and the list below has unique and fun options to elevate your lattes to the next level. This iced coconut latte recipe from Coconut Mama mixes coconut milk, maple syrup, and ice to her coffee to add a sweet and creamy texture to her latte.

FAQ:

Difference Between Traditional Iced Coffee vs Cold Brew

This article from Torke breaks down the differences:

Traditional Iced Coffee

  • Brewed with hot water and then chilled
  • Brew time is much shorter (approximately 2 minutes)
  • The coffee grounds-to-water ratio should be doubled; 1:2

Cold Brew

  • Brewed with cold water
  • Significantly longer brew time (12-24 hours)
  • To steep cold brew, first, coarsely grind your coffee beans, then steep the coffee grounds directly in cold water using a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or some other kind of filter
  • The coffee grounds-to-water ratio should be 1:4

Which Country Invented Iced Coffee?

Algeria! According to this article from American Dining Creations, historians have traced back the origins to the 1840s in Algeria when the French were fighting in the Battle of Mazagran. As the story goes, they supposedly ran out of milk so they used water instead and served it cold to combat the heat. Then the French soldiers brought it back to France where it was called café mazagran.

Can You Use Instant Coffee in Cold Coffee Drinks?

Yes! Jacqueline from Piper Cooks says it is one of the quickest ways to make a cold coffee drink since there is no cool-down time, no heat is being used, and it dissolves instantly.

What Kind of Coffee is Best for Cold Coffee Drinks?

Most articles I read said you should opt for a dark or medium roast coffee. This is because the stronger the brew the less likely the coffee flavor will be diluted when you add water or ice to it.
